investing for income cash flow bruce miller easy to understand total return reliable income income investing well written dividend growth income stream retirement investing excellent book great book net cash pretty much investment vehicles years ago found the book preferred stocks generate incomeTop ReviewsMost recentTop ReviewsRobert Johnston5.0 out of 5 stars I used the Fidelity online calculator which pretty much said my money should outlive meReviewed in the United States on July 22, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWaking up to the dividend paying world.
As I was getting close to retiring, I started asking myself- “How will my investments pay me a reliable income once retired?”
This started the process of consultations with various ‘Financial Advisors’. In fact, I got advice from Fidelity, Vanguard, ICMARC and a by the hour advisor. In addition, I read half a dozen books on safe retirement investing.
It was a fascinating exercise in futility. I used the Fidelity online calculator which pretty much said my money should outlive me. With Vanguard, I spoke to an advisor, which very politely explained how – based on my answers to their questionnaire and their Monte Carlo simulators – my money should out live me. There recommendation- 40% Total Stock Market fund and 60% Total Bond Fund. I asked – “What will I get paid each month or quarter?” No answer really- “We can’t predict the future”. “So will I have to sell funds to generate income?”
A couple of the books strongly suggested annuities. Ah Ha! That’s the answer- I get monthly pay like clockwork. The more I looked into it the less it made sense. I would be getting a monthly check but I would be giving the insurance company most all my retirement money and not being able to ever get it back as a consequence.
So on to the hourly Financial Advisor. Perhaps he will provide the answers. He suggested Vanguard Target Funds. Not much payout though.
So, how will I get paid?
Since the internet has all the answers (good and bad) I googled ‘How to get an income from stock investing’. There it was, a book- ‘Retirement Investing for Income Only’ by Bruce Miller.
The clouds lifted- at last some clarity. A big shift in my understanding of how I had invested in the past and how I will proceed in the future. I saw my confusion clearly now. Capitol appreciation is not going to pay a reliable income.
I look at dividend payments like an annuity. A whole new world opened up to me through the author. How does dividend payments continuing to be paid and actually rising throughout the financial meltdown of 2008-2009 sound to you? How about stocks that have paid a decent 4% through that period? Some of these stocks certainly took a hit on price during this time but it didn’t affect their dividend payments.
Yes, that is what I am after…..it’s not worry free, but close as I can get.Read more39 people found this helpfulHelpfulCommentReport abuseDaniel Vasquez4.0 out of 5 stars I found the book very valuable and easily readable. I have moderate experience as an investor …Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2016Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI found the book very valuable and easily readable. I have moderate experience as an investor and believe that the book is valuable for novices and intermediate investors. The value, in my opinion, is introducing higher yielding securities to the reader. Most people I believe break investments down into S&P 500 stocks and bonds. There’s much more.
When I retired in 2010 I discovered DGI (dividend Growth Investing) which made a lot of sense. Most of what I read was focused on Blue Chip companies and especially Dividend Aristocrats. I structured my portfolio accordingly. It turns out that in order to supplement our SS checks, we would need a 7 figure portfolio of dividend Aristocrats to meet our modest cash needs and to SWAN (sleep well at night) now. We had about half that amount. We couldn’t afford to wait 15 years for the miracle of dividend compounding to work its magic. Bruce’s book introduced higher yielding securities, how to value them and how to put together a portfolio. Our portfolio is still a DGI one in the broad brush, but it yields much more NOW than the Aristocrats could. In a nutshell, for us, 70% of our portfolio is high yield (4+% yoc) and 30% Aristocrats. Cash flow meets our needs, the dividends continue to grow and we SWAN.
Bruce is retired and lives on his dividend cash flow, is concerned about investment safety, and of course promotes diversification. In other words he eats his own cooking. Bruce changed my financial life forever and Thank You just doesn’t seem to be enough.
I gave the book 4 stars as I, a non-accountant, struggled with his Net Cash Flow metric, which includes items from operations, investment activities and financial activities.Read more27 people found this helpfulHelpfulCommentReport abuseD. Brunone5.0 out of 5 stars A Mandatory Read for InvestorsReviewed in the United States on November 3, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI am not a novice at investing or trading, having spent many years learning from some very good traders. I also have a graduate degree in statistics and an undergrad in engineering. I was firmly steeped in Modern Portfolio Theory, the Trinity Study statistics, and everything else the investment world preached.
The problem was that having retired, I wasn’t ready for what drawdowns feel like in the absence of a paycheck! In a nutshell, the big problem is that when your stocks start to drop (and bear markets will always occur) how do you know that they will eventually come back and provide capital gains? And how do you provide yourself with income while your stocks are down? CD’s, money market funds and bonds are not what they once were. And certainly selling when your stocks are under pressure is a losing proposition. Enter investing for income.
I had discovered the concept of investing for income on my own many years ago, but Bruce Miller has expanded the concept to a concrete process. Remember that Wall Street has absolutely no incentive to teach this method or to do it for you. The more that they can obfuscate, make you dependent on them and pay their fees, the better they like it.
I found Income Only to be sensible and well-articulated. It breaks down the IO investment process into a set of definable steps that an interested and reasonably intelligent person can follow. To be clear, investing for income does NOT avoid drawdowns. But there are at least three mitigating factors with this method. First, investing for income ensures that you continue to be paid even when your stock is out of favor. Secondly, as long as a company is paying and raising its dividend, you have a strong indicator that the company continues to have value and therefore decent future prospects. Finally, a proper allocation to this investment approach will likely temper and shorten the draw-downs which are sustained.
But the investor still needs to do their homework, as this book rightly emphasizes. For the most part, the book is an excellent tutorial for the entire IO process. One suggestion that I have for the author is to give the stock screening section a bit more clarity, and perhaps use examples of Income, Cash Flow statements and Balance sheets from a common source with a common, accessible format, such as Yahoo Finance.
I also think that this approach is unique enough and rigorous enough that it deserves its own newsletter service, especially for stock selection and overall portfolio construction. I truly hope the author moves in that direction in the near future.Read more64 people found this helpfulHelpfulCommentReport abuseSee all reviews from the United States

Ken3.0 out of 5 stars Book is too Wordie but Contains a Good Investment ConceptReviewed in Canada on October 5, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseBook is too wordie, somewhat disorganized and with too many investment examples. What the book is trying to say is to buy stock of larger companies that have a long history of paying dividends. That in a market correction such companies will probably continue to pay their dividends, that the resulting fall of stock price will eventually recover all the while you continue to receive the same, or nearly the same, dividends. That’s the book.
There are some good research charts to help you find the best dividend companies. I think this conservative investment concept is very good.HelpfulReport abuse
